It has been 25 years since Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant's book Subway Art was first published. Widely regarded as the “graffiti bible,” Subway Art documented graffiti art during the 1980s in New York City primarily in the borough of the Bronx. For it's 25 anniversary the book was re-leased this year into an anniversary edition which includes larger images and more content. This re-release coincides with the publishing of Cooper's current book Going Postal, which documents contemporary art disseminated through cities on postal stickers stuck to common urban surfaces.

Stacia Yeapanis Lecture: We Have a Right to Be Angry: Feminism, Fanvids and Fair Use

Stacia Yeapanis is a Chicago artist who creates video pieces which “explore her own complicated position as a feminist in contemporary society.” She utilizes television images that have been part of her life experience to create “FanVids.” She defines “Fanvids” as, “Showing the viewer's experience, interpretation...So my work is about the user's response, not the producer's intent.” In the wake of the Associated Press accusing artist Shepard Fairey of Copyright infringement for basing his now ubiquitous Obama Hope poster on one of their photographs, Yeapanis' talk on Fair Use at this year's V

Abraham Velazquez Tello Photography work at the Chicago Art Department

The work of Chicago Artist Abraham Velaquez Tello tackles the issue of gender identity through photographing the traditional and structured world of Mexican “Machismo.” Having just finished the group show “"Evita el Exceso" at the Chicago Art Department with the Tripa Collective, an organization he founded with artist Jova Duran in 2007, he is currently working on the Machos project which is a book aimed at documenting Mexican male subcultures, subcultures such as the Luchadores or Mexican Wrestler and the Caballeros or Cowboy.

“Quality” is definitely not sacrificed in the pursuit of showcasing work solely by female creators in the current show at 32nd&Urban Gallery. The show, curated primarily by Kepha, features predominantly paintings, as well as photography and craft work. The show includes work by Chicago female artists Billie Stone, Emily Cunningham, Kristal Pacheco, Maria Gaspar, Nova Czarnecki, and Tricia Moreau Sweeney. Billie Stone's work is part of the newly revitalized, majority female, genre of arts of crafts.
